When human remains were unearthed during construction in the Village of Williamsville in 1969, speculation ran quickly to one name: Jonas Williams, the miller and land agent for whom the village is named. The identification passed into local lore and has been repeated ever since.
This book returns to the documentary record — deeds, probate files, newspaper accounts, and the physical evidence of the 1969 discovery itself — to ask whether that identification was ever justified.
